Almond Flour??

What is almond flour? This question is one that has become exceedingly popular among the masses. As the trend for having a healthier lifestyle has overtaken American society, almond flour has become a major player in the many ingredients we use to cook. When the health craze started to take over American society, people sought out ingredients in foods that were rich in vitamins and minerals and good for you. They wanted to eat healthy, and feel healthy too. But, some people just really crave that afternoon cookie or piece of cake. With almond flour those cravings are able to be satisfied. Almond flour is a rich alternative to wheat flour. It tastes great, is very easy to get, is very nutritious, and is easy to use. As the almond flour market has recently exploded, the possibilities in cooking are becoming very broad; as people have really begun experimentally cooking with it, and have established many recipes of use.

The benefits of eating almonds and not just almond flour are astounding. Almonds help us to get a rich diet of vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, protein, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and monounsaturated fats. By eating almond flour in the many foods a person eats, they are more likely to have a lower blood sugar (low glycemic index), which helps to prevent diabetes and cardiovascular disease. With wheat flour, the carbohydrates eaten are converted into glucose (sugar) in your body. People who struggle with sugar intake, such as diabetics can’t produce enough insulin to counteract the overdose of glucose in the body; like you and I do. Typically type one diabetic’s who are not allowed much sugar at all throughout their life, are able to enjoy the benefits of having cake and cookies with the help of almond flour. This being said, we all can use the benefits that almond flour brings to the table. Especially since on average 3 million people die each year from poor management of blood glucose levels, whether it is by diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. A recent study done by Kendall Jenkins and association with the “Journal of Nutrition” proved that when people who were feed almond flour based meals, had a lower blood sugar, less insulin output, and an increase in levels of protective antioxidants. Almond flour is a great alternative to help to live a healthy lifestyle, and can even be bought in local stores in and around Missoula. So the next time you go shopping at your local grocery store, consider almond flour for a healthy choice.

  2. I agree, very interesting. They use almond flour in a lot of my raw food recipes.

In my raw food recipes, it's just almonds ground up into a powder in a food processor. It is literally 100% almonds with nothing else. Is this the same as the almond flour you buy in the store?

The only downside to almond flour is that it's more expensive than regular flour.
